Bangkok teaches us a new perspective on life, to not take it too seriously, and how to wink. On weekends, we go to the same café—not for the caffeine, but for endless conversations with Mr. Pumpui, who, like us, loves Bangkok. We count the monitor lizards basking in the sun outside our windows. We go to temples just before closing time, only to explore them on our own in the last few minutes. On the way home, we grab a grilled banana, wash it down with a cold coconut, and keep driving. We sit in scorching traffic, sweating buckets. We linger in restaurants where sometimes we have to move our table a few meters because a car wants to park in our spot. We cruise the canals, which take you almost anywhere without traffic. We freeze in air-conditioned trams, both above and below ground, observing the styles of people from all over the world.We drive through the city at night. Like in a video game, we cut through congested streets with slaloms and shortcuts. Two levels of concrete snakes twist and turn overhead, as if trying to take over the city, and we continue across bridges and streets to the other side of town, sometimes aimlessly, just for the fun of it. Because life in Bangkok is pure joy for us. As if we'd stepped out of our seriousness and age. As if we were kids again.
